Why do the gunman always break the windows out when firing out windows in the movies ?

Couldn't they just lift the window?  Or if they are pressed for time and don't want to risk it they could just fire through the window.   The thing is its not like they are ducking when they break out the windows in cowboy movies. Just open the window Jesse James!
