Before about 1960 movie cameras were heavy items that required a tripod.  Any camera that was small enough to film by hand made too much noise to get good audio.  Two separate people at about the same time got the idea to make a hand carry movie camera that could capture audio.   It's quite a contrast to the present day where video cameras are ubiquitous.
