I designed a servo controlled and driven mirror machine that was fully automated. Included with this was automatic abrasive, water and polishing compound application.
I caste the following blanks out of borosilicate glass. It was real work getting to the point that the mold did not stick terribly.
16 inch
This blank was slumped over a hemispherical form leaving the back curved also. I worked in over till it had the correct saggita but could never get it not to have astigmatism. At the time I was talking to a science nurd turned mortgage agent if I remember right by the name of Dave. He had a friend working on the Webb space telescope who really knew what he was doing and I sent it off to him and he ground the back flat. Then worked the front. It ended up with no astigmatism after that.
20.5 inch
This blank was sent to a fellow named Villareal.
